The past several weeks have brought difficult political news that is negatively affecting our community and will have far-reaching consequences in the coming weeks, months, and years. We at RaisingHealth encourage you to take care of yourself and those around you more than ever, to turn to your community for support and strength, and to reach out to the RaisingHealth team for any assistance you may need, including mental health support. RaisingHealth is here for you, now and in the future.
The RaisingHealth team is in the office Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. Visit us to make an appointment to receive a health screening, get help navigating social services, or learn more about how to keep you and your family healthy.
Upcoming Events and Announcements
Mural Unveiling Event
Join us TODAY (Tuesday, November 19) from 3-4pm at our mural unveiling, where community members, elected officials, funders, partners, and the RaisingHealth team will gather to cut the ribbon on our brand new community mural, designed and installed in collaboration with dozens of community members by local artist Yukiko Izumi. The unveiling will take place at 834 5th Avenue, Brooklyn. RSVP here!
Flu Clinic
Flu season is ongoing, and we highly recommend you get a flu vaccination to protect yourself from serious illness. We will be providing free flu vaccinations at Duane Reade Pharmacy on Saturday, November 23 from 12-3pm - register here!
Toy Drive
We are holding a toy drive from now until December 12 to collect toys for children ages 3-10 to give out at our toy distribution, a big part of our annual Winter Wonderland event, which also features free health screenings, resources, food, and holiday decorations. We’d greatly appreciate your donation of toys to help us bring holiday cheer to the children in our community! You can drop off unwrapped toys at any of the following locations:

Giving Tuesday
Tuesday is taking place on December 3 this year, and RaisingHealth is raising funds to protect our immigrant families from separation and hardship in 2025 under anticipated federal immigration policy changes. Your support is more important than ever to ensure we can sustain and expand our services to meet immense new needs in our immigrant communities. Conversation and Digital Literacy Classes
We are offering both free conversation classes and computer literacy classes to anyone who wants to improve their conversational and digital skills in English. Conversation classes take place in Sunset Park on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons – register at bit.ly/rhconversationclass. Volunteer Opportunities
RaisingHealth is seeking committed volunteers who want to make a difference in the Sunset Park community! Volunteer activities include assisting with community outreach, food distributions, health fairs, and translation/interpretation. Sign up here!
We are also looking for individuals to join our Community Care Team, a small group of volunteers that are dedicated to providing safety services for our community. All of our Community Care volunteers receive safety trainings on upstander intervention and de-escalation. We would love to offer safety accompaniment services to community members who may be experiencing anxiety traveling through the neighborhood on their own. If you are interested in joining us, fill out our interest form!
RaisingHealth Mental Health Services
Have you faced a traumatic incident? Experiencing feelings of sadness or hopelessness? Would you like to speak with someone? RaisingHealth offers FREE mental health therapy in English, Spanish, and Chinese Mandarin, Cantonese, and Taishanese! If you’re uninsured or underinsured and seeking mental health assistance, fill out this interest form.
Free Blood Pressure Tests
RaisingHealth is offering a FREE blood pressure test with our community health partners on a WALK-IN basis. Get yours checked at our office (5306 3rd Ave, 2 Floor, Brooklyn) on Fridays from 10am-6pm or Saturdays from 10am-12pm. For more information, please call 212-256-9036.

October Snapshots
Pop-Up Health Fair
Over 200 community members attended RaisingHealth’s October pop-up health fair, where we and our partners provided free preventive health screenings, grocery bags, and health and social service resources. We were even able to reserve a portion of our grocery bags for our wonderful ESOL students who were attending class in the same building as the fair. Look out for information about our next large health fair: our annual Winter Wonderland in December!
Mural Painting Party
Over 50 community members joined us at our two painting parties to help paint a mural designed by local artist Yukiko Izumi on a Green-Wood Cemetery wall. Check out the finished product near the intersection of 34 St and 5th Ave in Sunset Park.
Flu Clinic
RaisingHealth held a free flu clinic at Duane Reade Pharmacy, vaccinating over 25 Sunset Park community members to protect against the seasonal flu. Our next flu clinic will take place on Saturday, November 23: sign up here.
Participatory Budgeting Workshop
Our Community-Building team held an Idea Generation workshop with our ESOL students to gather and submit community project ideas for the NYC Civic Engagement Commission’s Participatory Budgeting initiative. We will continue empowering our community members to engage civically and educating them about how they can use their voices to make the change they want to see in their community.
ESOL Class Graduation
Led by our President & CEO Hewett Chiu, our summer/fall ESOL class in NYC Council District 43 wrapped up in October and celebrated their graduation from the program. Congratulations to our dedicated students for completing this class!
Food Distribution
We provided fresh, culturally-appropriate produce and pantry staples to 273 community members during our food distributions held in October!

Flu Season
Flu season is ongoing! It is crucial to get your flu shot as soon as you can to help prevent serious illness from the flu. COVID-19 is also still circulating around NYC. We highly recommend you get both a flu shot and the recently updated COVID vaccine this fall!

Laboratory testing for COVID-19 remains low to no cost at NYC Health+Hospitals locations. If you are an NYC Health+Hospitals patient, you can schedule a COVID test by calling 1-844-NYC-4NYC. Private insurance may no longer reimburse you when you purchase at-home test kits. For now, oral antiviral medicines, including Paxlovid, remain free. Find a location on the COVID-19 Test to Treat Locator or call 212-COVID-19.
Asylum Seeker Resource Navigation Network
If you entered the U.S. after January 1, 2022, and currently live in New York, you are eligible for services and referrals by the Asylum Seeker Resource Navigation Network, which was recently launched by the City. Visit this site to learn more and make an appointment, conducted in your preferred language.
NYIC’s Community Toolkit
The New York Immigration Coaltion’s (NYIC) New York State Community Toolkit is an all-in-one resource guide for community members, partners, and allies. It is updated regularly based on changing laws and policies and connects immigrant New Yorkers with resources across the state. It is published in English, Spanish, Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, Chinese, French, Karen, Nepali, Somali, Creole, Polish, and Ukrainian. Download the toolkit here.

Feria de salud emergente
